LHS and VHHS Capture State Titles in Music Competition
Community High School District 128 is pleased to announce that BOTH the Libertyville High School Wind Ensemble AND the Vernon Hills High School Wind Ensemble were named the top bands in each of their respective classes at the annual Superstate competition held May 9 at University of Illinois. While both VHHS and LHS have received the title of Honor Band in the past, this is the first time that both schools earned this distinction the same year. The VHHS band is directed by Randy Sundell, while the LHS band is under the direction of Don Shupe and assistant director Dustin Helvie.
The Superstate competition draws the top bands from all parts of Illinois. In order to perform at the Superstate festival, bands must submit a recording in March. Only the top bands are selected to perform at Superstate in May. Four judges, who are music educators from major universities around the county, hear all the bands at the Krannert Center in Urbana and write comments for directors and students. At the end of the day, the judges select only one band in each class as the top band in the state of Illinois and give them the title of Honor Band. VHHS was named Honor Band in Class AA and LHS was named Honor Band in Class AAA. Being selected as the Honor Band is one of the highest honors for a band director and the students.
